100 Young Nigerians Equipped with Engineering Skills in Edo State

CADD Centre Partners with EdoJobs and GIZ SKYE programme to Tackle Youth Unemployment

LAGOS (27 AUGUST 2019) – To help realise the Edo State Government economic development through job creation, CADD Centre Nigeria in collaboration with Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under its Skills Development for Youth Employment – SKYE programme has graduated 100 youths from a 6 weeks pilot training, part of the Edo State Young Engineers Programme (EDOYEP). The training was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), through the GIZ SKYE programme.

The training’s closing ceremony, which took place at Edo Production Centre Benin City, attended by guests and EDOYEP graduates of Architectural CAD, Mechanic CAD, Electrical CAD, Interior Design CAD and Project Management courses. Speaking at the ceremony, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs Ukinebo Dare said the training provided opportunities for the participants to be equipped with in-demand skills in the engineering sector for self-sustenance. He appreciated the partnership the state government had enjoyed with the GIZ SKYE programme in promoting skills development for economic prosperity, youth employment and further discouraging illegal migration.

Ukinebo commended the graduates for believing in the vision of Governor Godwin Obaseki to create 200,000 jobs, noting, “We look forward to you being at the crusade to re-enact Edo as the centre of economic development in Nigeria.”

Speaking during the event the Executive Director of Riverbank Technologies and Engineering Limited, Mr Ayoola Jolayemi, said the company has so far equipped 10,754 Nigerians with skills in engineering designs. This, he added, includes the 100 beneficiaries who recently completed the young engineers training programme in Edo State.

Ayoola noted that more collaborative efforts between government, development partners like GIZ SKYE and training organizations such as CADD Centre will further help to bridge the skills gap in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering und Maths (STEM). He identifies STEM based skills as the bedrock of innovative and highly productive future workforces, integral to the economic development of the continent.

He explained, “CADD Centre’s goal is to continue to partner with governments, development agencies like GIZ SKYE, and corporate organisations to improve the design and project management capabilities of 50,000 young engineers across the country by 2025. Our courses have been designed keeping in view the needs of the industry and the certificates, which are presented on the successful completion of the course and which are recognized globally”.

All 100 graduates present at the ceremony were presented with Diploma certificates in their area of training. CADD Centre in collaboration with EdoJobs will ensure the new graduates secure internships and/or fully paid employment with employers within and outside Edo state.

One of the beneficiaries, Irefin Benedicta, while commending the organisers of the training said her life has turned around for the better, since she enrolled for the training. She narrated, how she received a request for a commercial design job three weeks into the training. She added that by the fifth week of the training she successfully executed 3 different designs for different clients and has received payment for the job. Another beneficiary, Faith Idahosa, said the training programme has equipped her with practical knowledge in using computer software to further her engineering profession.

The programme Skills Development for Youth Employment – SKYE, is a four-year programme funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. SKYE focuses on the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the labour market through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to tackle unemployment and underemployment, root causes of irregular migration and socio-economic degradation in Nigeria. The programme is addressing the supply and demand sides of the integrated employment approach by focusing on improving the quality of TVET in the labour-intensive construction and agriculture sectors and the occupational field of industrial mechanics. SKYE promotes public and private stakeholder dialogues about TVET and supports Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
